The Power of You

The Power of YOU

Recently, a new tablet came on the market, designed specifically for children ages 4 and younger. (Yes, that’s 4 years old and younger!) The Vinci is a “real touch-screen Android-based product” with a tagline of “Inspire the Genius.”
Technology is a great thing, but I’m still a firm believer in some old-fashioned approaches to childhood. No one – and no thing – is better for your child than YOU. As your child’s first and best teacher, here is some simple, every day encouragement that I hope will help you inspire the genius that is uniquely your child.
Start by embracing your role as your child’s first and best teacher. You know your child better than anyone – what makes him giggle or what calms him down. It’s the little things like the happy little rituals and time together that you incorporate throughout the day that matter the most to your child developmentally, academically, and emotionally in the long run.
Give your child the gift of being able to entertain himself. Simple toys and playthings go a long way in developing a big imagination, providing hours of fun, and inspiring endless creative thinking. This kind of free play inspired from within is what gives a child a sense of creative accomplishment and healthy self-esteem – both things that will help him stand out and be successful as an adult too!
Involve your child in your day whenever you can. Sing and talk with him as you’re getting ready in the morning. If you’re doing chores around the house, give him a duster too. If you’re in the kitchen fixing supper, give him a bowl and spoon, or as he gets older, let him help cook too. Outdoor chores are fun together too, and often turn into very happy memories of simple, yet special time together. All along the way, your child is learning not just the how-to, but also gaining a spirit of can-do.
Celebrate the little moments. The moments when the lullaby you sing calms your fussy baby, your toddler busts out in a contagious belly laugh over your silly antics, when your preschooler’s eyes light up as you enter his world of pretend, or when you help your big kid realize he can do something all by himself. You make all the difference for your child – you and only you.
So, while the latest technological gadget may be tempting, I can promise that it will never be better than you. Just taking pleasure in the precious and fleeting moments of childhood, being there when your child needs you, and taking time to just BE with each other… these are the very best gifts you can give your child. Never underestimate the power of you!

find great music!

As a former elementary music teacher, if a children's CD annoys me, it has to be bad! That being said, during my son's first year I combed through children's music that I could tolerate listening to at home and didn't find much. THEN, we found Kindermusik. Our first unit was the summer Village class, "Peek-a-boo I Love You." As I listened to the CD for the first time, I was impressed with the high quality recordings and the variety of music (great cultural music, some classical, some folk, plus all the childhood favorites). Since then, our CD player almost always has a Kindermusik CD in it. I have yet to be disappointed. It is truly the best children's music out there. If you'd like to download some tunes to listen to at home, try the Kindermusik music download site: http://play.kindermusik.com/en/. You will love it. I promise.

Why Kindermusik?

WHY KINDERMUSIK? “An arts education helps build academic skills and increase academic performance, while also providing alternative opportunities to reward the skills of children who learn differently.” -Gavin Newsom, San Francisco Mayor

This quote is near and dear to my heart, as I was most definitely one of those children (and teenager, and adult!) who thrived in music. And through that music gave my life a purpose. More importantly, the arts opened my eyes to a broader education. Give your child a chance to thrive!

I originally offered these classes on Tuesday mornings, but have changed to Thursdays. See the class schedule on the left side of the page to see what might be a good fit for you. "We're so much more than just music!"

Kindermusik is so much more than just a music class...our age-appropriate curricula challenges your child mentally, physically, socially, and promotes creative growth. Join us for a free class and see what Kindermusik has to offer your little one.

Give Your Brain a Work Out

Written by Kindermusik educator, Aimee Carter, as originally posted on her Delightful Sounds blog.  Amy offers Kindermusik classes through her program, Delightful Sounds, which is located in Brandon, Florida.

I was doing some research about the benefits of music study today and ran across an article about the effects of music study on the brain. I found the article particularly interesting because of the following quote: “The effect of music training suggests that, akin to physical exercise and its impact on body fitness, music is a resource that tones the brain for auditory fitness and thus requires society to re-examine the role of music in shaping individual development.”
Simply put, music is great exercise for the brain, particularly in those areas which affect listening, reasoning, and language skills. Parents who expose their children to musical activities, such as our Kindermusik classes, are giving their children an early advantage for enhanced development and academic success. The developmental foundation that is established in these young minds will increase memory function, listening skills, and creative learning. It is also interesting to note that this study specifically referenced these same benefits for children with special needs who participate in music training.

A sneak peek into an 'Our Time' class

Kindermusik's toddler class, Our Time, is one of the most popular classes offered. If your child is age 18mo-3years, I highly recommend enrolling them in my 'Wiggles & Giggles' Our Time class. I've seen first hand (through my 2 year old son) the benefits of taking part in this rich experience. Kindermusik carries over into every day life...my personal favorite being the 'put away' song. It's not too late to enroll for fall!!!

fall early enrollment gift

It seems to early to be thinking of fall, isn't it? But in all reality, the kids will be off to school before we know it. I have designed our semester to work in concordance with Wahoo Public School's schedule to make your family's schedule easier. Thus, "fall" semester actually starts in mid-August (same week the kids go back to school). If you enroll in a fall class by Wednesday, July 20, you'll receive an early enrollment gift of your choice of a set of egg shakers or a musical book. You can enroll at www.kindermusik.com or e-mail me at kindermusikwithjenny@hotmail.com.

Games to Get Your Toddler to Listen: Engage Your Mini Mimic

Games to Get Your Toddler to Listen: Engage Your Mini Mimic

I have to share this article! It mentions using a focused listening activity to help your toddler with direction following. Kindermusik classes are loaded with focused listening activities. It's always fun to hear it from someone else.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Engage Your Mini Mimic

Pick out a sound that's not immediately in front of you, like the dog's bark that's coming from next door. Call your child's attention to it by saying, "Listen! Do you hear that dog barking?" Then, stay very still and quiet, modeling how to pay close attention by carefully listening. Next, ask your little one to copy what she's hearing (if she hesitates, you can prompt her with your own interpretation of the sound).

How It Helps Being able to focus on a sound without a visual cue might be tough for your toddler at first, but over time this activity will help her learn to listen carefully and improve her concentration skills. "Encourage her attempts by saying, 'Wow, I like how you listened to that doggy and tried to sound just like him,'" says Mari Blaustein, director of Early Childhood Initiatives for GrowUpLearning.com.

first class of the summer!

We had our first classes of the summer today! This morning our 2-4 year olds in ABC Music & Me, Marvelous Me, learned more about how their bodies work. We made sure to MOVE and label our movements, what body parts are moving, etc. today. We sang about the way other animals and plants grow. In our morning infant class, Village, Busy Days, there was a lot of beat keeping taking place--bounces, bicycle legs, bilateral movement-- while singing about all the places we could go. We rocked and looked at books and cooed over how cute our babies are. :-). My joy is having little ones to sing and dance with. We would love to have you join us for a free class. Look for early enrollment incentives coming soon for upcoming sessions.

movement is more than running around :-)

Movement is connected to spatial relations, developing motor skills, and even helps neural pathways connect so that little minds can absorb more information. http://mindsonmusic.kindermusik.com/
